We came into the studio expecting to be challenged and have our ideas crushed into gold dust like Nick did recording "A View." The shoe never dropped. JC was much more laid back and, for better or worse, we kind of did what we wanted.

Instrumentally, we were still an immature band writing semi-complex arrangements with a Neanderthal approach: Guitars + pedals + amps = loud. I believe our rigs included an old Hiwatt (we didn't use words like "vintage" back then), a Charvel with EMGs, a Boss or DOD distortion pedal, a Fender strat/partscaster with lace sensors, a Sovtek Mig-60 (may have had a bad tube) and a Big Muff. Both guitars appeared to fight for the same frequencies, the "thick" spectrum, if you will, which muddied up the sound. In writing, however, we looked for melodies and harmonies to complement the main riff and leave space for each other.

This may have been only our second trip out of Florida and we had not yet dealt with wounded egos at this scale. We had not mastered the "I don't like this part" conversations, and these made the most difficult aspect of the recording process. But we would have plenty of practice, and we would get better at it.

Our collaborations with John Ralston, the fruits of his short time in the band, marked another turning point in our musical direction. Otherwise, the sound, the experience, the emotions, everything, was raw.

The summer of ‘97 I was about to leave where I had lived my entire life and go 14+ hours away. That summer I found California. I bought it because Eric and Wayne were a part of Starflyer’s Americana album. From the first, “Thank you! Lassie Foundation” introduction I was in. This was the soundtrack to that time of my life. Loud music with soft singing w lyrics that were both hopeful+ realistic. It is still one of my fav albums ever and I love that I can have it on vinyl. Thanks guys. Seth Davison
